Donkey Day 14 – 02 – 07

Duration; 2 ours in the evening

Place; behind the marked of Al Deam-street in Khartoum, Sudan

Project of; Nisren Abasher (SU), Jae-min Kim (KR), Danielle Davidson (NL)

A mutual relationship between the donkey and owner was the attempting of this day. This was happening in one place behind of El Deam street in which the environment transformed into a different atmosphere during the event. All the owners washed their donkey beforehand. Decorations were prepared for the donkeys with remnants of textile.

On this donkey day 14th February 2007 from 12:00 to 14:00 the owners decorated their donkey. There was food for the donkeys and the people; it was a celebration. Owners were given the option to nominate the most beautiful donkey of the day. There was a first and a second place. What was important was that there was good co-operation with Ali, who worked with the donkeys in this place in El Deam. He communicated about the event with the donkey owners and helped them to prepare their donkey. A time of two hours was not a long time and this short time made all the thing absorbed.  The owners were very enthusiastic and the event grew and progressed by itself.

Passing the Wall, Khartoum, HATCOW project

Duration; 2 ours in the evening

Place; Al Deam-street in Khartoum, Sudan

Summary; The speed of life in Al Deam Street captured with light.

Project of; Nisren Abasher (SU), Jae-min Kim (KR), Danielle Davidson (NL)

The tempo of life in Sudan is different. People walk slowly, more slow than in countries like Holland or Korea. There are many types of transportation, each with their own character, speed and appearance.  We projected a light onto a wall, which brought all the different “speeds” of Sudanese life together. The Spectator could see all the layers of the street. The wall acted as a cinema screen, where the different speeds of the street where projected through shadows. The people of El Deam where helpful with the preparations. During the projection people gathered in front of the wall. In the beginning it was the speed which was the most important. People experimented with the lights and made their own choreography.  People gathered, and also participated. A couple of people played football, and tried things out with the different sizes of the shadows. Controlling the image was an element in this. Music had a role as well. During the evening the size of the crowd grew. They stayed and the wall transformed into a theatre.
